Professor and Academic Nguyen Van Hieu was born on July 21st, 1938, in Cau Do, now in Ha Cau Ward - Ha Dong District - Hanoi, in an officer’s family. In 1956, he graduated with an excellent bachelor's degree in physics from the Vietnam National University. In 1960, he was sent to work at the Dubna Institute for Nuclear Research in the former Soviet Union. In April 1963, after more than two years in Dubna, along with the publication of 12 physics works, he defended his doctoral dissertation at the age of 26. In 1968, at the age of 30, he was awarded the title of Professor of Theoretical Physics and Mathematical Physics of the Dubna Institute and the University of Lomonosov. In 1969, he returned to Vietnam and became a great contributor to the establishment of the Institute of Physics, Vietnam Academy of Sciences.
In his 60 years of work, Professor and Academic Nguyen Van Hieu has been assigned many different responsibilities by the Party and State, such as Head of Institute of Physics, Head of Institute of Materials Science and Head of the Vietnam Academy of Science. The academic, a prestigious and well-known scientist among domestic and foreign scientist circle, was an academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Soviet Union, and the Third World Academy of Sciences. In addition, He was also the 4th, 5th,6th, 7th and 8th National Assembly deputy. Professor and Academic Nguyen Van Hieu has achieved many successes with his will, energy and eagerness, making remarkable contribution to narrow the science gap between Vietnam and of the world. He has been awarded many domestic and international prestigious scientific awards (Lenin Award for Science and Technology in 1986, Ho Chi Minh Award for Science and Technology in 1996, the first phase).
Apart from internationally well-known works on particle physics, solid theory and photonics physics, Professor and Academic Nguyen Van Hieu is the author, co-author and creator of many applied research projects that have a great impact on the development of the country, such as the Mekong Delta drainage works in the Mekong Delta, malaria prevention using domestic materials. He is also one of the first people to lay foundation for Vietnam space science and technology through the intercosmos program.
As the head of the Vietnam Academy of Sciences and the National Center for Natural Sciences and Technology for many years, Professor and Academic Nguyen Van Hieu has taken care of building key science and technology sectors, from small research units to leading research institutes in the country.
