On March 8th, 2011, a ceremony to present Kovalevskaia awards took place at the Centre of Women and Development at 20 Thuy Khue street, Tay Ho district, Hanoi to encourage female scientists to try their best and contribute to the nation’s scientific and technological development. The event was held by the Vietnam Women’s Union and the Kovalevskaia Awards Committee. The awards were presented to two outstanding female scientists, including Assoc. Prof. Dr. Luong Chi Mai, Vice Director of the Institute of Information Technology under Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology for her outstanding scientific contribution, especially in the field of recognizing scripts and voices.

Kovalevskaia awards is an annual prize for groups and individuals who are female scientists showing outstanding achievements in researching and applying science in practical life, with usefulness in socio-economic and cultural fields. Up to 2009, the awards were presented to 34 individuals and 15 groups of outstanding female scientists in natural science.
Ms. Mai is considered as one of leading people in recognizing Vietnamese scripts, with many research papers printed in prestigious magazines in Vietnam and in the world. So far, she has made public 48 research papers. Over the past three decades, she has successfully conducted research and projects at the state and Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology level. She has won many noble prizes. She started to research recognition of printed scripts in the late 1980s. In 1998, Ms. Mai and her co-workers designed and developed the first software for recognizing Vietnamese printed scripts in Vietnam called VnDOCR. With over ten years of development, so far, VnDOCR 4.0 has served thousands of units in 60 provinces and cities nationwide, and over 40,000 editions have been commercialized and attached Hewlet Parkard scanning machines in Vietnam. The first version was presented with many prizes, such as the first prize of the most favourite information technology product from 1999 to 2003, the gold medal for software products with high sales in 2000 and 2001 from the PC World Vietnam magazine, and the first prize of the Vietnam Fund for Scientific and Technological Creations (VIFOTEC) in 1999.
With outstanding achievements and contributions in science, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Luong Chi Mai was presented with certificates of merit of the Prime Minister in 2005, the Minister of Science and Technology, and the Executive Committee of the Vietnam General Confederation of Labour; a medal of the Central Committee of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union; an award of Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology in 1990; a certificate of merit of the National Centre for Natural Science and Technology of Vietnam in 2000; and an award for female cadres in information technology field in 1999.
