Transferring technology and equipment producing biodiesel and additional products from Mu Oil Tree to Lao partner

On August 18th, a ceremony on transferring technology and equipment to produce biodiesel and additional products from the mu oil tree (Vernicia Montana lour, under Euphorbiacca) between the Institute of Applied Materials Science and Teak wood import and export one member limited liability company took place in in Luang Prabang, Laos.
The event was held on the occasion of Luang Prabang liberation day and the 50th anniversary of Vietnam – Laos relation, according to Decision 870/QĐ-KHCNVN dated July 2, 2012 of President of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) on transferring no-waste technology producing biodiesel from Vernicia Montana lour under Euphorbiaccae from the Institute of Applied Materials Science to Teak wood import and export one member limited liability company.
The pilot workshops producing biodiesel from Vernicia Montana lour under Euphorbiaccae, equipment and technical process of producing additional products from Vernicia Montana lour under Euphorbiaccae, chemistry and equipment to analyse product quality, were transferred during the event. Representatives of Luang Prabang authorities, leaders from the Institutes under the Laos Ministry of Science and Technology, districts where Vernicia Montana lour under Euphorbiaccae were planted; Academician Nguyen Van Hieu, president of the Scientific Council of the materials science sector under VAST, and leaders and staff from the Institute of the Institute of Applied Materials Science attended the ceremony.

At the ceremony, representatives watched pilot products right at the workshop, such as producing cattle food and starch from the bark of Vernicia Montana lour under Euphorbiaccae. They also witnessed a biodiesel pilot production from oil of Vernicia Montana lour under Euphorbiaccae and used biodiesel B-100 (100% metyl ester of the oil of Vernicia Montana lour under Euphorbiaccae) to run an electric generator, and biodiesel B-20 (20% metyl ester of the oil of Vernicia Montana lour under Euphorbiaccae and 80% of diesel from mine) to use for motor cars. In 2015, Laos is scheduled to import 440 million litres of diesel. Using 20% biodiesel from oil of Vernicia Montana lour under Euphorbiaccae, Laos can save 88 million litres. Total area for planting Vernicia Montana lour under Euphorbiaccae in Laos by 2015 can be up to 200,000 hectares. Each hectare will yield three or four tonnes of oil of Vernicia Montana lour under Euphorbiaccae, equivalent with 1 to 1.2 tonnes of petroleum oil according to this technology.
This no-waste technology line can process 300 kilos of Vernicia Montana lour under Euphorbiaccae per day with products, including 100 kilos of oil of Vernicia Montana lour under Euphorbiaccae, 120 kilos of starch to be cattle food, 30 litres of high bio-active to make pesticide, 40 composite brick blocks from the skin of Vernicia Montana lour under Euphorbiaccae. Nowadays, Vernicia Montana lour under Euphorbiaccae can bring high economic effectiveness, so its price is expected to raise from 1,000 kip per kilos to 1,200 kip per kilo (1 kip is equivalent 2.8 VND).
