Vietnam – 21st member of International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis

.

Under the direction of the Prime Minister and the help of the Vietnam Embassy in Austria, the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) presided over and coordinated with relevant agencies (including the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Justice) to carry out negotiations to join the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA). At the 83rd Council meeting at Laxenburg, Austria, IIASA held an official ceremony to welcome Vietnam as the 21st member.

The ceremony drew the participation of representatives of the Council of 20 member countries; Prof. Nguyen Dinh Cong, vice president of VAST; Nguyen Thiep, Vietnamese ambassador to Austria; and several cadres from VAST. VAST was admitted as a country member, representing Vietnam, from November 1st 2013. This Council meeting promulgated a resolution to recognize council member from Vietnam as a member of the IIASA member committee.

VN21

IIASA is an independent international organization, oriented to research policies and strategies for global issues, focusing on three major fields, including energy and climate change; food and water; and poverty and equality. IIASA research aims to find solutions, propose polices and manage global issues that one country alone can not solve. The fact that Vietnam becomes the 21st IIASA member will create good conditions for scientists to participate in annual summer training programmes in the fields of energy, water, environment and climate change held by IIASA. Young Vietnamese scientists will also participate in doctoral training as well as international projects carried out by IIASA.

Prof. Nguyen Dinh Cong, vice president of VAST, and Nguyen Thiep, Vietnamese ambassador to Austria, delivered speeches at the ceremony

With the aim of promoting research cooperation to meet the demand and bring benefits to the country, together with other IIASA member countries, Vietnam identified that bringing young scientists to participate in IIASA training programmes and doctoral training is an urgent demand to approach and participate in relevant data networks in order to provide analysis of national issues in a regional and global context.
