From October 15th to 19th, 2013, the Institute of Mechanics under the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology coordinated with the Vietnam Association of Mechanics to successfully organize the 14th Asian Congress of Fluid Mechanics (ACFM-14) in Hanoi and Ha Long City.
The congress was held under the sponsorship and support of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST), the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Vietnam Association of Mechanics.
The Asian Fluid Mechanics Committee (AFMC) was founded in 1980 in India. The founders of AFMC are Prof. H. Sato (Japan), Prof. M. Narasimha (India) and Prof. Peiyuan Chou (China). The objective of establishing AFMC was to advance research in fluid mechanics in Asia through interaction and exchange of information between workers in the field of Fluid Mechanics.
The committee has 26 members. Its chairman is Prof. Jiachun Li, from the Institute of Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Its two vice-chairmen are Prof. G.S. Bhat (India) and Prof. Yu Fukunishi (Japan). The member representing Vietnam is Prof. Dr. Sc. Duong Ngoc Hai, vice president of VAST. At the meeting, the Council elected Prof. Dr. Bhat (India) to be chairman for the followed tenure instead of Prof. Jiachun Li (China). Apart from two vice-chairmen for the new tenure, including Prof. S. Fu (China) and Prof. O. Mochizuki (Japan), the Council decided to expand the management board to two member countries, including Vietnam with Prof. Dr. Sc. Duong Ngoc Hai, representative of the host of ACFM-14, and Malaysia with Prof. C. S. Ow, representative of the host of ACFM-15 in 2016.
ACFM is held every three years. ACFM-1 was organized in Bangalore, India in 1980. In each congress, the latest developments in studying theory, practice and calculation, as well as industrial and technological progress in fluid mechanics are presented and discussed.
Entitled “Future faith, future Asian: Research for global sustainability”, ACFM14 is the first Asian congress of fluid mechanics in Vietnam. The event drew the participation of scientists from 16 Asian countries and several other countries in the world. More than 250 scientific reports, including 13 invited reports and 50 reports by Vietnamese scientists, were presented at the congress. Reports were made during five general meetings, 31 special sub-committees and three topic conferences.
Major topics at ACFM14 included:
- Aero-acoustics and aerodynamics
- Astrophysical fluid mechanics
- Boundary layer flows
- Compressible flows and gas dynamics
- Computational fluid dynamics
- Environmental and natural fluid mechanics
- Fluid machinery and industrial fluid mechanics
- Flow control and measurement
- Flow induced noise and vibration
- Flow visualization
- Geophysical fluid mechanics
- Heat and mass transfer Hydrodynamics and hydraulics
- Membrane and porous media flows
