VAST insignia awarding ceremony to Prof. Dr. Seishi Kimura and Prof. Dr. Casareto Beatriz Estela

.

Under the authorization of the President of Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST), Director of the Institute of Marine Environment and Resources Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Dinh Lan has presented insignia to two foreign professors who are working at Japanese universities.

The presentation aimed to recognize their positive contribution to the marine environment protection in Vietnam in general and the marine environment research at VAST in particular.

These two professors are Prof. Dr. Seishi Kimura from Mie University and Prof. Dr. Casareto Beatriz Estela from Shizuoka University.

The presentation was in the framework of the international workshop entitled “Emergency issues of marine ecosystems in Southeast Asian countries: Towards sustainable use of marine ecosystem services" at the Institute of Atmospheric and Oceanic Research (Tokyo University, Japan) from September 5th to 7th.

Prof. Dr. Seishi Kimura, from Biological Resources Postgraduate, Mie University, Japan, and Director of Fish Research Department, Alternate Chair of the Japan Association of Fish Studies, published over 100 scientific works in prestigious scientific journals and dozens of monographs on marine fish.

Since 2010, Prof. Kimura collaborated with the Department of Marine Biodiversity and Conservation under the Institute of Marine Resources and Environment in providing training courses on marine fish research to 40 young Vietnamese scientists in Nha Trang and Khanh Hoa (2012) and Do Son and Hai Phong (2014). He was also an active scientist in promoting Vietnamese marine fish research activities between Japanese research teams and Vietnamese scientists. Prof. Kimura, and scientists from the Institute of Marine Resources and Environment published five articles in International Journal under the list of SCI / SCI-E and SCOPUS.

As a scientific adviser, a new species of marine fish has been published for science, Chlopsis orientalis Tighe, Hibino & Nguyen, 2015, with specimens collected in Thuy Trieu Lagoon, Nha Trang.

Especially in 2018 as a co-editor, Prof. Nguyen Van Quan has finished editing the English-Vietnamese bilingual monograph on "Fish in Ha Long Bay" printed in Japan. This is considered the first published work and very valuable reference for classification of marine fish in Vietnam.

Prof. Dr. Casareto Beatriz Estela is from the Green Science and Technology Research Institute, Shizuoka University and the University of Science and Technology (Faculty of Energy and Environmental Systems). Her research focuses on a number of areas such as marine plankton, microbial ecology and their importance in the food web of the coastal ecosystem. She is studying the assessment of carbon and nitrogen processes in coral reefs and the importance of blue-green algae in coral reef ecosystem.

Over the past year, she has focused her research on coral bleaching and diseases resulting from global climate change and human impacts. Most of her recent research aims at clarifying the causes of coral bleaching at the molecular level. Prof. Casareto is a member of the ISRS (International Coral Reef Society), a member of the ISRS Awards Committee, a member of the Japanese Coral Reef Society (JCRS), an editor of GALAXEA (JCRS) and President of JCRS International Cooperation Committee. She has published nearly 60 articles in prestigious international journals, worked as the main guide of three PhD students for the Institute of Natural Resources and Environment. She acted as a bridge in receiving and training three other PhD students.
