On December 27, 2017, the Vietnam Science and Technology Journalists' Club announced the results of the selection of 10 outstanding scientific and technological events in 2017.
This is the 12th consecutive event held. Ten outstanding scientific and technological events in 2017 are voted by 40 journalists specializing in science and technology, coming from nearly 20 national and local mass media agencies.
Ten outstanding scientific and technological events in 2017 belong to the areas of policies, natural sciences, social sciences and humanities, applied research, and honouring of scientists. The list of 10 events includes:
1. The National Assembly adopts the Law on Technology Transfer
On June 19, 2017, the National Assembly adopted the revised technology transfer law which consists of 6 chapters and 60 articles stimulating regulations on technology transfer activities.
2. For the first time, the Government issued Directive 16 / TT-CP on strengthening capacity for accessing the 4th industrial revolution
The directive clearly states that the 4th industrial revolution, with the tendency of development based on the highly integrated foundation of the digital-physical-biological connection system, using the breakthrough of Internet and artificial intelligence, is changing the world's production. The 4th industrial revolution take full advantage of the spreading power of digitization and information technology. The new wave of technology is taking place at different speeds in countries around the world, but is making a powerful impact on every aspect of socio-economic life, leading to change in the mode and force of production of society
3. Dr. Ha Phuong Thu receives the Vietnam Women Award in 2017
The Vietnam Women's Union awarded the Vietnam Women Prize in 2017 to Dr. Ha Phuong Thu - Head of the Department of Biomedicine Nanomaterials, the Institute of Materials Science under the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, for having made contributions in the care of the public health. Dr. Ha Phuong Thu, one of the few outstanding young scientists in Vietnam, has been published internationally 30 times on biomedical nanotechnology, and serves as the head of many state-level projects and those of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, and the National Fund for Development of Science and Technology.
4. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Quang Liem receives ASEAN Meritorious Service Award (AMSA)
On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of ASEAN and the 22nd anniversary of Vietnam's accession to ASEAN, on October 20, 2017, in Myanmar, the Organizing Committee of the 17th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Science and Technology (AMMST- 17) awarded Prof. Dr. Nguyen Quang Liem from the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, the ASEAN Meritorious Service Award (AMSA). Prof. Dr. Nguyen Quang Liem has published more than 150 articles in prestigious international and national scientific journals and been co-author of the State Technology and Science Award 2005 for the cluster “Basic research on optical – electronic magnetism substances of some advanced electronic materials”.
5. Project "Displaying relics in the basement of the Building of National Assembly"
In order make the Building of National Assembly a highlight reflecting the everlasting vitality of the centre of power in national history, the Party and State decided to put aside part of the space under the two basements of the House of National Assembly to exhibit important discoveries of underground archaeology of the World Cultural Heritage Area - Thang Long Royal Citadel. Located on the east side of the Building, at 7-13 metres underground, the exhibition has an area of about 3,700 square metres.
6. Nha Trang Astronomical Observatory put into operation
Inaugurated in 2014, Nha Trang Astronomical Observatory is located in Hon Chong (Nha Trang, Khanh Hoa), being one of two observatories built in the framework of the project by the Space Centre of Vietnam. By the end of September, 2017, the Nha Trang Astronomical Observatory was officially put into operation, welcoming visitors and serving scientific research.
The Nha Trang Astronomical Observatory consists of a 0.5 meter diameter optical telescope, a 60-seat cosmic projection screen house and a 200-square-meter space display.
Some of the studies expected to be carried out on this work include observations of variable stars, thus performing atmospheric studies (thickness, clouds, fog); measurement of stars’ spectral lines to collect information about the type of stars, speed of rotation and magnitude on the surface of the stars; measurement of the radial velocity of the host star to look for planets; measurement of the speed of rotation of some planets; study of the morphology of galaxies; search of objects near the earth, supernovae or optical emission accompanied with rapid radio outbreaks.
7. Viettel deploys the largest, most modern 4G network in the world
The 4G network by the Military-run telecommunications group Viettel uses technology of 4 receive – 4 transmit, meanwhile, in the US., the old technology used is 2 receive, 2 transmit. According to Ericsson, this is the largest network in the world, the fastest investment in the world. Thus, although Vietnam ranks 160th in the world economy, it is the country that invests in the largest telecommunications network in the world.
8. 20 years since Vietnam has been officially connected to the Internet
After 20 years of development since the official Internet connection on November 19, 1997, Internet in Vietnam has impacted all aspects of current social life and that in the future with the 4th industrial revolution. As of 2017, Vietnam has 64 million Internet users, accounting for 67% of the country's population. With this number, Vietnam is the 12th highest Internet user in the world and the sixth among 35 countries and territories in Asia.
9. Hoa Lac Hi-Tech Park starts the aircraft engine factory
On September 21, Korea-based Hanwha Techwin Company inaugurated Hanwha Aero Engines factory in Hoa Lac High Tech Park (Hanoi). This is the first investment project in Vietnam related to the aviation engine industry.
10. Traphaco put the first 4.0 technology plant in Vietnam into pharmaceutical production
In July, 2017, Traphaco Joint Stock Company inaugurated Hung Yen Traphaco Co., Ltd, bringing the most modern pharmaceutical factory in Vietnam into use. The factory consists of 3 workshops, 5 synchronous and modern production lines, meeting the highest requirements of the pharmaceutical industry by using advanced technology.

In 10 outstanding scientific and technological events in 2017, the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) is proud to be honoured in three categories: Honouring of scientists (Dr. Ha Phuong Thu was named in the Top 50 most influential women in Vietnam); international cooperation (Prof. Dr. Sc. Nguyen Quang Liem received the ASEAN Meritorious Service Award – the award marking the 50th anniversary of ASEAN, recognizing his contributions to sciences with his colleagues throughout the world); and natural sciences (Nha Trang Astronomical Observatory was put into operation).
Notably, both scientists honoured among the 10 events come from VAST.
