Seaweed is rich in vitamins, minerals, especially proteins, water-soluble polysaccharides, lipids, polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), pigments, carotenoids, etc. So, for a long time, they have been used as functional food, medicine and raw material for the production of cosmetics and food for humans and animals.
In recent years, seaweed has been more and more interested in researching to produce skin care cosmetics, especially in skin care masks. Seaweed extract has the main effect of anti-wrinkle, anti-aging, anti-inflammatory, protecting skin against the effects of ultraviolet rays, moisturizing and skin whitening, providing other vitamins such as A, C, E which help to form and regenerate new skin cells and fight oxidation.
Currently, seaweed face masks have been commercialized to have seaweed or raw extracts from seaweed, mixed with various chemical ingredients and preservatives. They have advantages of being easy to trade, multi-functional, simple and long-term storage conditions. However, it contains chemical preservatives. If used for a long time, it will affect user's health such as hormonal imbalance, even cause of cancer. Therefore, the creation of natural products derived from Vietnamese seaweed with the advantage of high quality raw materials, safe and effective for users is the necessary study. It contributes to lifting high competitiveness of domestic cosmetic products with foreign ones, and promises to be a foreign exchange earner for the country's economy in the future.
In the 2017-2018 period, Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) assigned the project “Study on crude extract from several species of Vietnam seaweed (macroalgae) for cosmetic application” to the Institute of Biotechnology. Dr. Ngo Thi Hoai Thu was head of the project which aimed to produce the product used as a face mask from the seaweed source of Vietnam.
SEAWEED CNTCREAM product – Seaweed mask cream produced according to TCCS02:2018/VCNSH
After two years of implementation, the project has screened and determined conditions to preserve four potential seaweed species (Caulerpa lentillifera, Kappaphycus alvarezii, Sargassum crassifolium và Ulva reticulata), which can be grown on a scale large, large exploited reserves, quality assurance as raw materials for cosmetic production; The formula for mixing skincare masks with high extract of four seaweed species (5 mg /mL) and cream format is the most suitable form for creating seaweed masks.
The products have effects of skin moisturizing, anti-UV, antioxidant, anti-microbial testing and whitening; Skin care masks from Vietnamese seaweed species have been tested and meet the requirements of testing criteria for cosmetic products, safe for users, granted with the code 321/KNM-18 of the Center for Preventive Medicine under the Ministry of Health on Jun. 25, 2018 and issued the basic criteria of the Institute of Biotechnology of SEAWEED CNTCREAM in accordance with the Decision No. 59 / QĐ-CNSH on Nov.9, 2018; SEAWEED CNTCREAM product has a quality of 4.03% water-soluble polysaccharide, 0.545% vitamin C + E and 0.042% carotenoid(Vietnam Certification centre- QUACERT under the Directorate for Standards, Metrology and Quality – the Ministry of Science and Technology).
The project has successfully developed the process of creating a skincare mask from Vietnamese seaweed species on a scale of 5 kilogrames of fresh materials per batch with stability, repeatability and high efficiency, simple and practical applications; created a skincare cream mask from seaweed capable of moisturizing skin, anti-UV, anti-aging, antibacterial and whitening. Products are low cost and safe for users.
A part from obtained research results, the project trained one master who successfully defended the graduation thesis and published an international article on the SCIE list (Journal of Cosmetic Science, 69: 447-462. Nov/ Dec, 2018), one article in biology magazine in 2018 (volume 3, No. 40, page 106-112); one article published in the National Biotechnology Science Conference 2018 (pages 212 - 217, with ISBN number: 978-604-913-759-4) and attended the Conference on Natural Science for Young master scientists and graduate students in ASEAN countries (CASEAN-5) on Oct. 4-7 2017. SEAWEED CNTCREAM brand - Seaweed mask cream has been approved by the National Office of Intellectual Property under the Ministry of Science and Technology (Decision No. 68450 /QĐ-SHTT signed on Sep.28, 2018).
On February 21st, 2019, VAST-level Science and Technology Council accessed the project excellent.
