́Project’s budget
7,600 million VND
Goal and objectives of the project

- Successful establishment of process to isolate cytotoxic and anti-inflammatory compounds from some echinoderms living in Central Coast of Vietnam (from North Central to Middle Central Coast)
- Successful creation of a functional food that help promote human's healthfrom some potential Vietnamese echinoderms

Main results

- Theoretical results:
+ 39 echinoderm samples were collected in Central Coast of Vietnam. These samples in coastal areas of Thanh Hoa - Quang Binh - Quang Tri -Hue - Da Nang -Quang Nam - Quang Ngai - Binh Dinh - Phu Yen, belong to 29 species including 8 sea cucumbers, 12 starfish, 4 crinoids, 4 sea urchins, and 1 brittle star.
+8 echinodermswere selected for studying chemical constituents and biological activities including 01 crinoid, 04 sea cucumbers and 03 starfish.
+ Investigated the chemical constituents of the 8 selected echinoderms and isolated, structurally elucidated 65 compounds including 7 anthraquinones, 30 triterpene saponins, 6 asterosaponins, 5 steroid glycosides, 12 steroids, 2 pyrrole oligoglycosides, 2 nucleosides, and 1 butenolide.
+ Evaluated the biological activities of pure compounds and found that triterpene saponins from sea cucumbers had potential for further investigations regarding anti-cancer effects, anthraquinones from crinoids and steroid derivatives from starfish have potential for further investigations regarding anti-inflammatory effects.
- Applied results:Successful creation of the functional food namely HOLOSTA the sea cucumbers and starfish.

Novelty and actuality and scientific meaningfulness of the results

+ The first time in Vietnam, investigations on chemical constitutents and biological activities of crinoid spcecies were carried out.
+ Isolated and structurally elucidated of 14 new compoundsincluding 2 anthraquinones, 6 triterpene saponins, 2 steroid glycosides, 1 polyhydroxysteroid, 2 pyrrole oligoglycosides, and 1 butenolide.
+ Successful creation of the functional food namely HOLOSTA the sea cucumbers and starfish.
