Goal and objectives of the project

- Isolation, structural elucidation and evaluation of biological activities of some compounds from the selected marine organnisms which were collected by the 5th expedion of the R/V “Akademik Oparin” in Vietnam;
- Contribution to training of young scientists in the research field.

Main results

+ Participated in the 5th expedion of the R/V "Akademik Oparin" in Vietnam. Three groups of marine organnisms, including soft corals, mollucks and echinoderms were collected by the expedition.
+ Successful isolation of 19 compounds, including 12 compounds from the soft coral Sinualria erecta and 7 compounds from the mollusk Neverita didyma. Successful identification of the structures of 19 isolated compounds, including a new eudesmene metabolite, 3β, 5α-dihydroxyeudesma-4(15),11-dien (SER8) and five analogs, four aromadendrane metabolites, and nine compounds belonging to steroid and other types.
+ Evaluated the cytotoxicity of the isolated compounds toward three human cancer cell lines, including lung carcinoma (A-549), cervical adenocarcinoma (HeLa) and pancreatic epithelioid carcinoma (PANC-1). The result showed that only the new compound 3β, 5α-dihydroxyeudesma-4(15), 11-dien (SER8) exhibits significant and selective cytotoxicity toward A549 cells (IC50 = 14.79 ± 0.91 μM). The inhibitory effects of the isolated compounds on nitric oxide (NO) overproduction were also examined. Unfortunately, all compounds were inactive at the experimental concentrations.
+ Sent one Vietnamese young scientist to Russia for scientific exchange.
