Goal and objectives of the project

a. Goal:
To evaluate biodegrability by phygical and microbial agents in different condition such as phygical, natural, composting processes, bio-convertion in aerobic, anaerobic and both of them of biodegradable polymes which Institute of Chemystry researcher providing and plastic bags using for dayly life with producers claimed “biodegrading plastics”.
b. Objectives:
+.Evaluation of biodegrability of biodehradable polyme (plastic bags) in laboratory condition
(1-2 laccase producers and polyme biodegradability by this enzyme; isolation of two thermophilic bacterium and actinomycete strains are able to degrade examined plastic bags and their plastic biodegrability).
+ Evaluation of biodegrability of biodehradable polyme in different condition
(in natural environmental condition for comparision to control and plus phygical factors
+ Evaluation of biodegrability of biodehradable polyme in composting process
+ Evaluation of biodegrability of biodehradable polyme at aerobic, anaerobic and combination of both aerobic and anaerobic condition
+ Evaluation of biodegrability of biodehradable sellectived polymes at pilot scal 1-2m3

- Polyme sources for this study contanings 4 kinds of defferent chemical nature: Bioplastic bags from The Netherland, Germany (HL and CHLBD), Sec, Exo-biodegradable plastic bags from research production of Institute of Chemystry (VHL), original chemical nature which LDPE, LLDPE plus pro-oxidants. “Friendly plastic bags” produced by imported technology which have original nature is HDPE admmended biodegrading additives (VN1, VN2,VN3 and VN5); the last group of representative plastic bags is VN4 which daily using in whole families and civil life actitity in Vietnam. Determination of 7 extracellular enzyme, the laccase enzyme is also included, all these living natural microbes or bacterial cultivation or basidiomycete fungal cultivated broth were carried out during the treatment of those plastic bags with mainly 6 microbial and one physical agents.
- The degradation level, phenomena and efficiency of plastic bags have been used the main methods which ASTM requite for biodegrability evaluation such as Weight loss, FTIR (strength (MPa), Tensile strength (MPa), total color difference (ΔE), Carbonyl index (CI), surfate structure ( SEM), metabolites (GC/MS), average molecular weight (Ubbelohde Capillary Viscometer) and microbial conventinal and microbial molecular biological techniques etc.

Main results

- Theoretical results:
All plastic bags (defferent treating polymers or plastic bags degraded with different efficiency, partent (phenomena), tested condition and pathways depending on chemical nature as well as treated environment. Bioplastics strongly degraded, in contrats exo-biodegradable 5-10 times weaker, “friendly plastic bags” also degrade weaker than exo-biodegradable plastics, the plastics which using daily in whole Vietnam degraded much weaker than all other exsamined polymers. It is following the order HL, CHLBD>VHL>VN1,VN2, VN3, VN5, Sec>VN4 etc. Firstly, the weight loss is following order 33-61%> 9-16%>0- 7%. The changes have found in all evaluated ASTM index, parameters with defferent level. Particularly carbonyl index, surfate structure, chemical structural alteration, new fuctional group apearence, new metabolites induction. The average molecular weight of VHL plastic bags decreased have been confirmed the action of all treated microbial and phygical agents. Thermophilic bacteria and actinomycete and agricaltural waste and munucipal solid waste (MSW) composting by them show the strongest potential candidates for reduction of plastic waste. Three of these evaluated plastic bags (HL, CHLBD and VHL) are promissing materials for composting.
-Applied results:
Three patents discribed are three mixture of bioproducts for plastic waste reduction or treatment (1) Four laccase inducers (belong to Basidiomycete genera Earlliela; (2)extracelular enzyme thermophilic producer (belong to Bacillus genera) and (3) extracelular enzyme thermophilic producers (belong to Streptomyces genera).

 

Novelty and actuality and scientific meaningfulness of the results

The results obtained from this study are new findings, therefore 3 patens were accepted and on the ways to receive these patents and other data still are in preparation to be published. All these genetic sources for the treatment of different kind of polyme (plastic bags) have a Vietnamese origin. Babed on the molecular and microbial conventional techniques in combination with phygical, chemical and other advantage analytical techniques the aim of this research completed in this first stay of long term study on the reduction of plastic waste in Vietnam. This can wildly and truthly applying in field trail and than scale up.

Place of application

The products of this project: Need more fund to collect and screene more genetic materials for the task in order to reduction and than removal of plastic waste in Vietman; The bioproducts from this project also need a fund to be tested in the real treatment field or industrial scale; Need the politic decision together with the fund for establishment of “ASTM” laboratories in Vietnam.
